We arrived at a village in Attapeu Province late in the afternoon, just before dark.
Some children were dehusking rice for dinner. They were rhythmically thrusting down the pestle to grind the unhulled rice in the mortar. It was quite hard work, but the children were happily working next to their mothers, who were taking care of the smaller children.
After being dehusked with the pestle, the rice is placed in a flat basket woven from bamboo, called a gadun, and winnowed to remove the rice husks and other impurities.
The village was marked for relocation due to construction of a dam and probably no longer exists.
People in the town said the relocation site was a good place, but what do the villagers think?
