For Laotians, flooding is not always a disaster. Rice paddies close to rivers may be damaged by floods, but practicing rice cultivation in areas slightly different in height will prevent the rice from being completely wiped out. People say that in years of severe flooding, rice production decreases, but they get more fish instead. Even in a flood, fish are caught here and there in flooded areas. Women often use four-armed scoop nets (sadung) or nylon nets, and children gather together with fishing rods and other equipment. The adult men set up a big barrier where the water was overflowing from a reservoir, aiming to catch the fish that were being washed away.
