This is a scene I saw while traveling in Savannakhet in 2007.
After the rice harvest, the whole family was threshing rice. The simple tool was made from a piece of string strung between two short poles. The string between the poles is wrapped once around a bundle of rice stems, which are struck on the ground to remove the unhulled rice. Even the small children were serious about helping out with the work. Boys of about junior high school age were working as hard as the adults.
The next year I saw a mechanical thresher. The way things were done in 2007 was hard physical work, so this is seen less and less these days.
