In the dry season in Savannakhet, you may see women walking in the woods and in the rice fields after harvesting. They are collecting various things, but the long stick seen in this picture is a tool used to collect hardened lumps of the sap, called keesee, of trees of the family Dipterocarpaceae. This long stick is used to knock the kheesee down from upper parts of the tree. In many areas in Savannakhet, trees are left growing in rice paddies. Because kheesee is sticky, it is applied to the bottom of boats to fill in holes. In the past, the people here used to make buckets for drawing water by daubing kheesee in bamboo baskets.
When I was shown the basket a woman was carrying, it contained edible wild plants and nuts besides kheesee. I noticed that collecting forest products can also be enjoyed while chatting with friends.
