It looks like a tadpole, but it is a young snakehead. It is said that the food inside the belly is squeezed out little by little and cooked as mok (wrapped and steamed in a banana leaf). The fish is caught in shallow places in paddy fields or swamps. Snakeheads nest in the foam in shallow, grassy waters, parents protecting their children from predators. It is a highly fertile fish and a carnivore that eats other fish, and so it may be that humans eat it in this way to maintain the ecosystem’s balance.
