Swollen during the rainy season, the Xe Champhone River overflowed into forests and paddy fields (1, 2).
In riverside villages still in a natural state, some of the people leave the village during the fishing season and live in huts by the river (3, 4). During the time they are catching fish, they bring their daily utensils down to the hut and sleep there. Fishing gear called toum are hung on a pole set up in the river (5). Tall objects, also called toum, are set up on the bank (6). Near the riverbank was a fish trap called a rorp, but it was mostly above the surface of the water, probably because the level of the water in the river had dropped (7). There is also a kind of fishing gear called a jun with a drop lid between the sides (4, 8). This is set up by anticipating the path of the fish. Large bag-shaped nets called jip were also seen in the river. In the evening, a man was setting one of them (9, 10). There are two types of jun: a large one used in rivers and the small one shown in the picture (11, 12). These are arranged in places in ponds or rice paddies where small fish are likely to pass.
