The toum is a kind of fishing gear shaped like a bird cage and made out of bamboo (1). The mouth contains a screen of woven bamboo strips (2), through which the fish, attracted by the bait, enter but cannot leave.
In 2002, floods in several parts of Savannakhet Province brought water to the side of a road, where a man was setting toum (3-4). The fish caught were guppies (5).
The main part of the toum is woven from bamboo (6), but the lid is sometimes made of a different material (7). Toum vary in shape according to region, ethnicity and location where they are set (3, 7-10), and the bait used is rice bran or insects (11). The kinds of fish caught also differ.
To use a toum, you need to know where the fish are and what they eat. For the mouth of the toum also, there is a way to make the screen so that the fish can pass through easily, and this requires skill. This simple-looking fish trap is full of the wisdom of the people.
