The harvest season arrived in November in a mountain village in Pak Beng District, Oudomxay Province. The Khum people in this community do not use a sickle, but use their palms to scrape the unhulled rice from the ears and drop it in a bamboo basket carried on the back. This is more difficult than harvesting by cutting with a sickle, but can reduce the amount of rice that falls to the ground and is wasted.
In this community, farm work such as rice sowing and harvesting is performed through labor exchange among the villagers. The harvest in this field brought together 16 families. As this was the last day of the harvest, the owner of the field produced a special meal for the villagers who had helped out. The beef stew and vegetable soup were made with generous helpings of vegetables grown in swidden fields and forest products from secondary forests.
