In the villages, many families grow herbs and vegetables in their gardens (1). There is a wide variety of herbs, including lemongrass, mint, chili peppers and different kinds of green onions. Unripe papaya is used for cooking. Since chickens, cows, and pigs are kept loose, sturdy fences are made so the animals do not eat the vegetables (2-6).
Leaf vegetables and eggplants are also standard crops (7-11). Poles and frames are set up for climbing vegetables (9, 10). Pineapples and bananas were also seen (11, 12). In a village on an island in the Mekong River in the Siphandone area, Champasak, I had the impression that many people were maintaining beautiful gardens. Each household was growing roughly 30 different kinds of herbs and vegetables.
Fruit trees are also planted near the house (13). These included trees such as tamarind (14), betel nut (15), sugar apple (16), mango (17), palm tree (18) and guava (19). There were many trees whose names we did not know. The villagers are always planting something (20, 21). Some of the houses had pandamus palms, but it is not known whether they grew naturally or were transplanted (22).
