Commercial logging was banned in Laos in 1991.
However, it is permitted to fell trees in locations that are to become dam reservoirs and therefore logging continues (1). Many Vietnamese logging companies were based In Attapeu (2). At first, sawmills and timber yards were not hidden (3), but gradually the lumber gathered together was hidden from view by surrounding it with screen fencing (4). In 2007, we were surprised to see a truck carrying large logs down in a forest (5), but logging was still continuing from 2012 to 2013 (6-8).
The life-sized sculpture of a water buffalo I saw at a hotel in 2007 was cut out of a single tree, but there are probably no trees big enough to carve such a sculpture in Attapeu anymore (9).
