Oudomxay Province, Pakbeng District has very mountainous terrain and for many of the farmers who live in the mountain areas swidden farming is an important means of making a living. Swidden fields in this region are in general cultivated on a rotational cycle of five to ten or more years, the secondary swidden forest nurturing various kinds of plants and wild animals. Non-timber forest products (NFTPs) that can be harvested from the secondary forest support the lives of the villagers sometimes as emergency food when the rice harvest is poor and sometimes as a source of cash. Various kinds of non-forest timber products harvested from secondary forests, such as mushrooms, bamboo shoots and wild vegetables can be seen on sale in the market in Pakbeng District.
