In Laos, the number of natural rubber plantations has been increasing since around 2006 due to foreign investment.
These scenes were taken in March 2006 while traveling south on Route 13 (1-3). In a number of places, large trees had been cut down and set on fire to create plantations. Where rubber trees have already been planted, stumps remain and forests can be seen in the background, showing that the plantation was originally a forest (4).
In exchange for the construction of a stadium for the first Southeast Asian Games in Laos in 2009, a Vietnamese company Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) secured a vast area for plantations in Attapeu Province. Around 2008, rubber plantations began to spread in Attapeu (5-8). There were many places where it was obvious that the forest had been clear cut (9). Some villages were also forced to relocate, and relocation sites were prepared (10). Rubber seedlings were brought in from Vietnam and grown locally (11-13). Near the plantations, signs were seen suggesting the construction of an HAGL hotel (14).
