The climbing plant sakaan is used in a dish called o-raam, which has a pepper-like spicy flavor.
Large amounts of sakaan are sold in markets, but it only grows surprisingly deep in the forest. At the time we were shooting the video in Luang Pabang, it was being shipped from a village of the Hmong people. The villagers said the place could be reached in a few hours, but the staff who went to take photos of sakaan finally arrived after a trek of more than eight hours. Unable to return to the town, they stayed in a forest cabin overnight.
Villagers said that forest areas where sakaan grows have been decreasing year by year.
