Dong Daeng Village has a lake where hundreds of soft-shelled turtles live. It is said that the lake is adjacent to a spirit forest, where there are spirits that protect the turtles. When I first visited the village in 2001, the children gathered and sang a strange song. One after another, soft-shelled turtles, nearly a meter in length, approached when they heard the children’s voices. Village guests such as ourselves are asked to share sweet cakes with the children and turtles. When I visited the village again about 10 years later, the simple shrine in the lake and the bridge leading to it had been nicely repaired and there was a splendid sign set up using foreign aid.
