Spirits are believed to dwell in what people call the mahesak forest. The spirits reside in a particular place, protecting nature and the animals. These forests are found in many areas of Savannakhet, including Saiphuthorn District and Kaison Ponvihan District. There was always a small shrine in the forest where villagers placed offerings of flowers, cigarettes, and drinks. Recently, these have been transformed into large shrines made of concrete.
When people break the rules regarding felling trees and hunting protected animals, “something” happens. For example, it is said that the sound of invisible horses running around the village can be heard in the middle of the night, or that people who violate the rules develop a fever from unknown causes. The villagers protect the forest for fear of being cursed. When we entered the forest, the villagers went with us, saying to the forest, “Grandfather, these people will do nothing wrong, so it’s alright.” The villagers do not approach these forests at night, but quickly leave the forest at dusk.
The spirits bring blessings as well as fear. If you pray to them, they may help you. Forest products such as mushrooms and sap can also be collected in the forests. It’s up to you whether you believe this is just superstition, but observing the forest rules leads to sustainable resource use. Some mahesak forests are water sources for the community. In Savannakhet, where the dry season is very arid, water from the forest supports the people's lives.
