In Vientiane, the capital of Laos, the Mekong River runs along the center of the town. People were fishing out in front of the current Mekong River Commission building, but that is no longer to be seen. Especially in the dry season, platforms were set up in the river for casting nets. Large fields were cultivated along the river, vegetables and corn being grown there.
The riverbank is now being consolidated with revetements and transformed into a park. In river fishing, customary fishing rights were often established in places where large fishing gear was set. In Vientiane at that time, a large number of the kind of fishing gear called jun were also placed on the riverbank. We don't know the details because we didn't see the owners and were not able to talk to them. In many cases, people were not eligible for compensation for the loss of customary fishing rights when development took place. One wonders what the case was in the fishing grounds shown in these photos.
