Logging has been banned outside degraded forests and dam reservoirs in Laos. The villagers left various kinds of trees in their paddy fields and felled those that could be used as lumber when necessary. Although the number of large trees has decreased considerably, this kind of work was still seen around 2005.
We were impressed with the technique of making boards using large saws. The agricultural off-season, the dry season, is also the time for villagers to build houses.
